Used grip truck for sale: what to check before you buy

A grip truck is a box truck fitted with racks, a liftgate and often an onboard generator, sold either empty or with a grip and electric package inside. Before you buy, check the title, the GVWR, the mileage and generator hours, the liftgate and the racks, then go through the package line by line. Price follows the truck size, which crews call 1-ton, 3-ton, 5-ton and 10-ton, the chassis year and mileage, the body and liftgate condition, and how much gear comes with it.

What to check before you buy

  • Title: clean and in the seller's name. Ask about any salvage or rebuilt history.
  • GVWR: it decides which license the driver needs and which commercial vehicle rules apply where you operate.
  • Mechanical: mileage, service records and a mechanic's look at engine, transmission, brakes and tires.
  • Liftgate: rated capacity on its plate, no hydraulic leaks, and it raises and lowers under load.
  • Generator: hours, last service, and whether it is quiet enough for your sets.
  • Body: racks, carts, floor and roll-up door in good order, with no water getting into the box.
  • Package: an itemized list that matches what is in the truck.

Questions buyers ask

Do I need a commercial license to drive a grip truck?
It depends on the truck's GVWR and the rules where you drive. Check the GVWR on the door plate against your local licensing rules before you buy, especially for larger trucks.
Should I buy a grip truck with the package or empty?
A packaged truck is ready to work, but you pay for gear you may not need. An empty truck lets you build your own package. Either way, get the package list and check it item by item.
What paperwork comes with a used grip truck?
The title, current registration, service records, any inspection records local rules require, and records for the generator and liftgate.
